Ann Curry Defends Foreign Correspondents, Twitter; Rick Sanchez Defends CNN | The New York Observer
I’ve covered this before, but the irony of MANY of the social media “cult of personality” wankers is that they fall prey to the EXACT SAME EGOMANIA of the Hollywood/mass media that came before them.
That egomania contributes to the folks at the top of the power law (Scoble, etc) thinking that they know everything about everything. What’s especially bizarre is that even though they are hyperconnected to lots of people, they can still fail to think empathetically.
Curry’s bit here is sheer poetry. New media douchebags thrive off of “old media” people that don’t know what they’re talking about (of which there are plenty, in powerful roles). From what I heard, Scoble got pwned in this conversation by Ann.
It changes the game when you have a deep perspective on the pros and cons of both angles [of any issue]. Seriously, how many of the new media douchebags out there have any real hands on experience creating content on par with the great journalists of the last 100 years? There’s no doubt that some great work has been done. But is anyone out there really really crushing it at the level of a Seymour Hersh and using new media tools to do it?
I wasn’t present at the exchange this morning, and I paid little attention to the #CNNfail whining, but the simple fact is that there is a wide market of information out there these days. In the same way that risk is inexorable from reward, veracity and depth are strongly negatively correlated to speed.
As long as you know what you’re buying…
